Welcome to God’s Marriage Blueprint
Welcome to God’s Marriage Blueprint. My name is Dave Hazelton. With tremendous help and input from Nancie and Bill Carmichael, we have written the book God’s Marriage Blueprint: Restoring the Beauty of God’s Original Design. My wife Beky and I have been married for 47 years. Nancie and Bill have been married for over 50 years. This book thus reflects over a century of lived experience in committed Christian marriages.
A Book Built on Scripture, Not Personal Opinion
Nancie and Bill are also bestselling authors on Christian marriage, family, and parenting. Their books include Habits of a Healthy Home (Bill Carmichael, Tyndale, 1997), Lord Bless My Child (William and Nancie Carmichael, Tyndale, 1995), Lord Bless This Marriage (William and Nancie Carmichael, Tyndale, 1999), and The Unexpected Power of Home (Nancie Carmichael, Deep River Books, 2018). They were also the founders of Good Family Magazines, which included Christian Parenting Today, Virtue, and Parents of Teenagers.
But neither our experience nor expertise is why God’s Marriage Blueprint stands out from much that has been written about marriage between two Christ followers. Rather than finding a few Bible verses here and there to support our personal views, we have worked hard to focus on the “creation truths” for marriage established by God from the beginning. We certainly have included stories, illustrations, and practical pointers. But they are intended to help the reader understand and apply what the Bible declares to be true.
“Rather than finding a few Bible verses here and there to support our personal views, we have worked hard to focus on the creation truths for marriage established by God from the beginning.”
What Genesis 1–3 Reveals About God’s Design for Marriage
Starting with the Bible’s first two chapters, we discover that God’s good plan for marriage is built on individual value and equality, shared authority and responsibility, the blessing of children and family, God’s abundant provision, relational need and fulfillment, and the central principle of oneness in marriage.
But Genesis 3 reveals that sin severely damaged marriage, though not beyond redemption. Sin brought shame, guilt, and fear. It resulted in isolation, blame, pain, dominance, manipulation, and competition for control. These are not superficial wounds easily healed. Sin and its consequences go down deep, and we cannot cure them ourselves.
Why Christ Is the Centerpiece of a Restored Marriage
The Bible also reveals our deepest need for a Redeemer to save us and our marriages. Consequently, as we uncover God’s creation truths for marriage, we discover that Christ alone can take away our shame, guilt, and fear. He also demonstrates two core qualities needed to restore our marriages: sacrificial love and submission.
Significantly, the Bible describes Christ’s relationship with His people in terms of a marriage (Matt. 22:1–14; 25:1–13; Luke 12:35–40; Rev. 19:7–9; 21:9). It should come as no surprise that Christ is both our supreme example of the qualities needed for a good and godly marriage, and the source of the ultimate cure for our marital woes.
From Theory to Practice: Applying the Creation Truths in Your Marriage
Thus, in addition to doing a deep dive into the creation truths for marriage revealed in Genesis 1–3, God’s Marriage Blueprint explores the many New Testament passages, including Christ’s words, that discuss these creation truths for marriage. Far from just theoretical concepts, these creation truths are practical and intended to be applied to help restore your marriage to God’s beautiful creation design.
This restoration process begins in three steps:
Accept God’s creation truths as the best plan for your marriage.
Assess your marriage honestly in light of those creation truths.
Apply God’s creation truths together, seeking His help to put them into practice.
While we hope that our book will help in this process, the transformation of your marriage takes a lot of hard work — together.
